Great Light is a Must
Allowing natural light inside the room opens the interior dimensions of your space and allows a vibrance to fill the area. If you do not have a lot of natural light, you can add some creative effects using light fixtures. You will be amazed at how this small addition can make a big difference and leave your space looking and feeling more open.
If you have access to natural light, bringing it into your home through large windows will instantly connect the room with the outdoors, no longer limiting your space! Use sheer window coverings or pull them back completely, to allow light into a smaller space. If the view is not the best, just put plants or flowers near the windows and use lamps to add a little life and glow to your room.
Open Architecture is In, Cramped Rooms are Out
Extend your space with furniture like a headboard/frame only style bed, standard height chairs, armless benches (with exposed legs and open backs), open bedside tables with glass tops and tall shelves. Adding open architectural furniture pieces will not only give you a reason to do some shopping but it will give you an endless and stretched appearance through your space.
Expanding Paint Colors
Light hues make a room feel expansive, so choose a light gray or soothing wall colors (like Sherwin Williams Sea Salt), or soft tones of off-white, blue and green. Also try painting your wall trim and moldings in a lighter color than your walls. By doing so, the walls will appear farther back, making your room seem bigger.
Strong and Strategic Decor Choices
- Large scale wall art (one large piece instead of many) or leave some walls blank to help make the room few more spacious.
- Mounted flatscreen TV. A mounted TV leaves more floor space for your room and helps you avoid bulky tv stands/dressers.
- Leave the large collection of knickknacks in the attic! To maximize your space, you will need to minimum your knickknacks (pick 3), leave some surfaces clear.
- Reflective ceiling pieces. Add a simple ceiling mounted crystal chandelier or anything that will reflect the light around your space.
